About Haig-Brown Institute:

Our mission statement is "To promote the links between ecology and economy through watershed management and to inspire a conservation ethic through education and literature."

Iona Campanolo - April, 2004 "We have only to explore the works of renowned author/naturalist Roderick Haig-Brown for whom the sparkling Campbell River itself was a life-long inspiration and guide. He and his remarkable wife Ann, were philosophers who in their long lives here thoughtfully defined human existence as being a balance between one's community and the natural world."

The HBI has a focus on local issues and needs with a long range perspective.Over the past 20 years, we are a metamorphosis, starting with developing Kingfisher Creek to a viable salmon spawning stream and constructing a fishway on the Quinsam River to improve pink salmon survival and bio diversity.Another phase was operating the Haig-Brown House and developing the associated programs such as a Bed & Breakfast, Writers In Residence, summer kids camp, and the HB Festival. During 2008, the institute focused on organizing a celebration of the centenary of the births of Rod and Ann Haig-Brown. The goal was to recognize the achievements of Ann and Rod and to animate younger generations who are living those same values and reinterpreting what it means to be a conservationist in the 21st century.
