Memories of Ann Elmore Haig-Brown - Courier Islander PDF Print
I was Senior English teacher at Carihi from 1962 until 1968, when I married and retired.from teaching temporarily.  As Ann Haig-Brown was the librarian, she and I worked closely together on  my students' reading and research assignments.  Her knowledge was encyclopedic.  She was an invaluable source of information and was always eager to order the books we needed to fill all our needs. She knew every student in the school and followed his/her progress closely.  She was so enthusiastic that she was an inspiration to all of us.  She was truly the warm, caring heart of the school in every way.

My husband Don, who was Math/Earth Science teacher at Carihi, and I also have very warm personal memories of Ann's friendship.  She offered us the rare gift of holding our wedding on their lawn with the roses and the sound of the river in the background.  As the day approached and the weather remained rainy and dull, she worried that we might have to hold the wedding indoors.  My response was cheerful, " Don't worry. I'd love to be married in your wonderful library.  It would be so fitting." However, the sun shone on us that day, and I feel  that  Ann offered us a special blessing on our marriage - we're celebrating our 40th anniversary of that glorious day on July 6th.  With our gratitude and love,

Betty-Ann Calimente (ne Carstens) and Don
